In 2011, my life changed forever with a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. As a relatively healthy person, I was not a sophisticated consumer of medical services. I had no idea what was in store for me, and I was overwhelmed with fear and a thousand other emotions.
Television commercials brought to life a dark, frail, and powerless vision of the cancer journey. One where I should simply do whatever the doctors said and give up my autonomy because I don't have a medical degree. Frankly, that just wasn't good enough for me. I realized I couldn't think of myself as a powerless patient; I had to become the "gatekeeper" of my health and quality of life. My love of learning and my analytical skills kicked in. I knew if I was going to survive and live the life I wanted, I had to dig deep and become the leader of my journey.
I knew what I needed. However, it was not available. What I needed was emotional support from someone who had experienced Hodgkin's Lymphoma before me. Someone who could assure me that what I was feeling was normal and could give me an idea of what was coming around the corner.
This void prompted me to find ways to self-soothe and support myself. I thought others must be feeling emotionally isolated as well. I kept this gap in the back of my mind while navigating cancer and healing.
After my treatment ended, I entered the new, and just as uncertain world of survivorship. The support system I had grown used to in the form of regular doctor visits was suddenly gone, and I felt the most alone. That was when I discovered the critical disconnect between clinical care and the holistic support needed for life after cancer.
These experiences are what led me to my purpose. In 2014, I joined the Cancer Survivor Advisory Council at the cancer center where I received treatment, to help make things better for others coming behind me. My purpose had found me!
Today, that purpose has grown into a mission. As a 2025 Bush Fellow and board-certified patient advocate, I now work at the intersection of community advocacy and clinical care. I am honored to have been named a 2025 Cancer Health 25 Patient Advocate for my work.
My leadership style is reflective of who I am, and I was equally honored to be recognized as one of HushLoudly's Gamechangers: Introverts to Watch in 2025.
To share stories and valuable perspectives on the hidden struggles of this journey, I created and host the Navigating Cancer TOGETHER podcast in 2021, named a Top 10 Cancer Support Podcast of 2025. It has become a powerful forum for raw, honest conversations.
How to say my name (e.g., "Tah-LAY-ah Den-dee”)
On a personal note, I love traveling, basketball, and reading. I’m also a huge sneakerhead! I believe in the power of laughter and community, and I love being around people I can learn from, walk with, and be myself with.

My personal journey directly inspired the creation of two distinct practices dedicated to providing direct, heart-centered support
My signature cancer doula practice, providing empathetic, emotional support and holistic care for individuals and families. This includes specialized survivorship doula support, focusing on the unique journey of navigating life after treatment.
Remembering the need to find ways to 'self-soothe' on my own journey, I created Laya's Haven. I soon realized this need for resilience extends to the entire care ecosystem, especially the dedicated professionals who support patients every day. This wellness coaching practice is primarily for them—a space to build a foundation of calm and prevent burnout, so they can continue to show up as their best selves for others.
"We loved having you on the show! You’re an amazing speaker, and your passion really came through."

"Talaya is an incredibly skilled and engaging speaker. She was so "real" in sharing her journey that led her to be a cancer doula and how she guides others. One of our biggest takeaways was how little diversity there is among patients and providers when it comes to clinical trials. She had a calming, yet forthright demeanor and clearly explained some of the challenges historically underrepresented groups have experience in trying to get quality medical care. We would absolutely bring her back to speak again! "
